Controlling a Computer From Your Phone: Gestures, Voice and a Black Screen

The computer is at home or in the office, and all you have is a phone. With RudyDesk the phone shows the desktop and lets you control it: grab a file, restart a program, help your parents. Nothing to install on the phone — the browser is enough.

What the computer needs

The computer you connect to must run the RudyDesk app for Windows, macOS or Linux. From a browser tab a computer can only show its screen: every browser forbids websites to move the cursor or press keys.

How to connect

  1. Open rudydesk.com/app on your phone
  2. Enter the computer's nine-digit number and password — or open the invite link the owner sent you
  3. Wait until someone taps "Accept" on the computer

If the screen is black with a "play" button

Tap the screen once. An iPhone in Low Power Mode (yellow battery) does not start video by itself, even without sound — it needs a tap. One tap anywhere is enough.

Gestures

  • One finger — moves the cursor
  • Tap — click, double tap — double click
  • Hold — drag
  • Two fingers — scroll, pinch — zoom
  • Three fingers left or right — switch windows (Alt+Tab)
  • Three fingers down — show the desktop

A toolbar button switches the mode: trackpad (your finger moves the cursor, like on a laptop) or direct touch (click where you touch).

Keyboard and voice

The keyboard button opens text input, with special keys and a separate Ctrl+Alt+Del button. The microphone button turns on voice: the computer hears you, so you can explain without a separate call.

How to end the session

The red "End" button is always in the top right corner. The first tap asks "End session?", the second ends it — so an accidental tap never breaks your work. The computer sees at once that the session is over.

For a smoother picture

  • Wi-Fi gives a noticeably sharper picture than mobile data
  • Turn the phone sideways — the desktop fills the screen
  • A green connection dot on the toolbar means all is well; yellow or red — lower the quality in the session menu

What a phone cannot do

A phone cannot share its own screen: mobile browsers (Android and iOS) do not let websites capture it. In RudyDesk a phone is a remote: you connect from it to a computer.
